Flutter Has Grown Up: Why It's Our Go-To for Cross-Platform Development (And Where It Still Falls Short)
When Google first released Flutter in 2017, the cross-platform landscape was crowded and skeptical. React Native had momentum. Xamarin had enterprise backing. Ionic had the web developer mindshare. Flutter entered the arena with an audacious proposition: forget the bridge, forget the WebView — we'll render every single pixel ourselves.
Eight years later, that bet has paid off in ways few predicted. Flutter isn't just a viable option anymore. At InfiniteBlue, it has become our default recommendation for teams building across iOS, Android, web, and desktop from a single codebase. But that recommendation comes with caveats, and we believe in being transparent about those too.
This article is a deep dive into how Flutter matured, why we chose it as our primary cross-platform framework, and the genuine downsides that every engineering team should weigh before committing.
The Maturation Arc: From Promising to Production-Grade
2017–2019: The Foundation Years
Flutter's early days were defined by a single, revolutionary idea: own the rendering pipeline. Instead of translating UI components to native widgets (like React Native) or wrapping a WebView (like Ionic), Flutter ships its own rendering engine — originally Skia — that draws every pixel directly on the GPU canvas.
This meant pixel-perfect consistency across platforms from day one. No more debugging why a button renders differently on a Samsung Galaxy S8 versus a Pixel 3. No more platform-specific CSS hacks. What you build is what users see, everywhere.
But in those early years, the ecosystem was thin. Package support was sparse, IDE tooling was rough, and the community was still small. Convincing clients to bet on Flutter required faith.
2020–2022: The Ecosystem Explosion
This is when Flutter crossed the credibility threshold. Several things happened simultaneously:
- Flutter 2.0 launched with stable web and desktop support, transforming Flutter from a "mobile framework" to a true multi-platform toolkit.
- Null safety landed in Dart 2.12, eliminating an entire category of runtime crashes and bringing Dart's type system closer to TypeScript and Kotlin in terms of safety guarantees.
- pub.dev exploded with high-quality packages. State management solutions matured (Riverpod, Bloc, Provider). Firebase integration became first-class. The "there's no package for that" objection largely disappeared.
- Google Pay, BMW, Toyota, Alibaba, and ByteDance all shipped production Flutter apps, providing the enterprise validation that CTOs needed to approve the technology.
2023–2026: The Impeller Era
The most significant technical leap came with Impeller, Flutter's custom rendering engine that replaced Skia on iOS (and later Android). Impeller pre-compiles all shaders at build time, which solved Flutter's most embarrassing problem: shader compilation jank.
If you used Flutter before Impeller, you'll remember the pain. The first time a user scrolled through a complex list or triggered a particular animation, the app would stutter while Skia compiled the necessary GPU shaders on-the-fly. It was a visible, measurable performance gap compared to native apps. Users noticed. Reviewers noticed. It was Flutter's Achilles' heel.
Impeller eliminated this entirely. Modern Flutter apps on iOS now achieve butter-smooth 120fps on ProMotion displays with zero first-frame jank. On Android, the improvements are equally dramatic with Vulkan backend support.
Other recent milestones include:
- Dart 3.0 with records, patterns, and sealed classes — making Dart genuinely pleasant for complex domain modelling
- WebAssembly compilation for Flutter web, dramatically improving performance over the previous JavaScript target
- Platform views maturity, allowing seamless embedding of native components (Google Maps, WebViews, video players) without the rendering artifacts that plagued earlier versions
- DevTools reaching parity with Chrome DevTools for profiling, memory analysis, and network inspection
Why Flutter Is Our Go-To
At InfiniteBlue, we evaluate frameworks pragmatically. We don't chase trends. When we standardised on Flutter as our primary cross-platform recommendation, it was based on hundreds of hours of production experience across multiple client projects. Here's what tipped the scales:
1. True Single-Codebase Delivery
This isn't marketing language — it's our lived experience. With Flutter, we write one codebase and deploy to iOS, Android, web, macOS, Windows, and Linux. Not "mostly one codebase with platform channels for 30% of features." One codebase, typically with less than 5% platform-specific code (usually just for deep OS integrations like biometrics or push notification handling).
For our clients, this means:
- 40–60% reduction in development cost compared to maintaining separate native teams
- Faster time to market — features land on all platforms simultaneously
- Fewer bugs — one fix, everywhere
2. Unmatched UI Flexibility
Flutter's widget system is, in our experience, the most powerful UI toolkit available in cross-platform development. Because Flutter controls every pixel, there are effectively no limitations on what you can build visually.

3. Developer Velocity
Hot reload remains Flutter's killer feature for developer productivity. Change a colour, adjust padding, refactor a widget tree — see the result in under a second without losing application state. This isn't hot restart (which React Native's Fast Refresh more closely resembles). It's a sub-second stateful reload that fundamentally changes how you iterate on UI.
Combined with Dart's strong typing, excellent IDE integration (VS Code and IntelliJ both have outstanding Flutter plugins), and the flutter_test framework for widget testing, our developers are measurably more productive in Flutter than in any other cross-platform toolkit we've used.
4. The Dart Advantage
Dart often gets dismissed as "that language Google made for Flutter." This is unfair. Modern Dart (3.x) is a genuinely well-designed language:
- Sound null safety catches nullability bugs at compile time
- Isolates provide true parallelism without shared-memory concurrency bugs
- Pattern matching and sealed classes enable exhaustive type checking for state management
- AOT compilation produces fast native binaries, while JIT compilation powers hot reload during development
- async/await is first-class, making asynchronous programming intuitive
Is Dart as large an ecosystem as JavaScript or Kotlin? No. But for the domain of building cross-platform applications, it's a focused, ergonomic tool that gets out of your way.
5. Firebase Integration
As a team that builds heavily on Google Cloud and Firebase, Flutter's integration with the Firebase ecosystem is seamless. Authentication, Firestore, Cloud Functions, Remote Config, Crashlytics — all have official, well-maintained FlutterFire plugins that feel native rather than bolted on.
The Downsides: Where Flutter Still Falls Short
We would be doing you a disservice if we painted Flutter as a silver bullet. Every technology has trade-offs, and being honest about them is how we build trust with our clients. Here are the genuine downsides we navigate on every Flutter project:
1. App Size
A minimal Flutter app starts at approximately 15–20MB on Android and 30–40MB on iOS. A comparable native app might be 5–8MB. For most modern applications, this is a non-issue — users have fast connections and ample storage. But if you're building for emerging markets where users are on 2G connections with 16GB devices, this overhead matters.
Flutter has improved here (tree-shaking, deferred components, split AOT compilation), but the fundamental overhead of shipping a rendering engine with every app means Flutter apps will always be larger than their native equivalents.
2. Platform Fidelity
Flutter apps don't use native UI components. They paint widgets that look like native components. For most users, this is indistinguishable. But discerning iOS users may notice subtle differences:
- Scrolling physics — Flutter's
BouncingScrollPhysicsis close to iOS's native elastic scrolling, but not identical. The deceleration curve feels slightly different. - Text rendering — Font rendering, text selection handles, and autocorrect behaviour have historically differed from native. This has improved significantly with Impeller, but edge cases remain.
- Platform conventions — iOS users expect swipe-to-go-back with a specific gesture threshold. Android users expect the system back button/gesture to behave in a specific way. Flutter handles both, but achieving truly platform-native feel requires deliberate effort with
CupertinoPageRouteon iOS andMaterialPageRouteon Android.
If your app is a highly branded experience (like a fintech app or a social media platform), this rarely matters — you're defining your own design language anyway. But if you're building a utility app that should feel like a "native citizen" of each platform, the gap is noticeable.
3. The Dart Ecosystem
While Dart itself is excellent, its ecosystem is smaller than JavaScript, Kotlin, or Swift:
- Fewer third-party libraries — If you need a niche SDK (say, a specific payment gateway's SDK or a hardware manufacturer's Bluetooth library), you're more likely to find a React Native wrapper (which bridges to native) than a Dart equivalent. You'll need to write platform channels.
- Smaller talent pool — Hiring Flutter developers is harder than hiring React Native or native iOS/Android developers. Dart isn't taught in most university programmes, and the community, while growing rapidly, is still a fraction of JavaScript's.
- Less StackOverflow coverage — When you hit a niche bug, you're more likely to find yourself reading GitHub issues than StackOverflow answers.
4. Web Performance
Flutter web has improved dramatically with WebAssembly compilation, but it is still not competitive with frameworks like Next.js, Nuxt, or SvelteKit for content-heavy websites. Flutter web excels for web applications (dashboards, admin panels, internal tools) but struggles for web sites where SEO, initial load time, and accessibility matter.
A Flutter web app's initial payload is significantly larger than a well-optimised Next.js page. Search engine crawlers handle Flutter web apps poorly because the content is rendered on a canvas element rather than in the DOM. If SEO is a priority, Flutter web is not the right choice (which is exactly why this very website is built with Next.js, not Flutter).
5. Platform-Specific Features Lag
When Apple or Google introduces a new platform feature (Dynamic Island, Live Activities, Material You dynamic theming), there's always a lag before Flutter supports it. You're dependent on the Flutter team (or community packages) to add support, whereas native developers can adopt new APIs on day one.
For cutting-edge consumer apps where being first to adopt new platform features is a competitive advantage, this lag can be a real cost.
6. Testing on Real Devices Is Non-Negotiable
Because Flutter renders its own pixels, you cannot rely solely on the simulator/emulator. Rendering differences between the Flutter engine on a physical device versus an emulator can surface bugs that don't appear in development. We mandate real-device testing on at least 3 Android devices (spanning different chipsets and screen densities) and 2 iOS devices for every release.
When We Don't Recommend Flutter
Transparency is part of our engineering culture. Here are the scenarios where we actively steer clients away from Flutter:
- Content-heavy websites where SEO and Core Web Vitals are critical → We recommend Next.js
- Apps that require deep, complex native integrations (AR/VR, real-time audio processing, low-level Bluetooth) → We recommend native Swift/Kotlin
- Teams with existing strong native expertise who only need to support 1–2 platforms → The overhead of learning Dart may not justify the cross-platform benefit
- Extremely size-sensitive applications targeting low-end devices in bandwidth-constrained markets → Native remains the lightest option
The Bottom Line
Flutter in 2026 is not the Flutter of 2018. It has matured from a promising experiment into a battle-tested, production-grade framework that powers applications serving hundreds of millions of users globally.
